Vlambeer's Jan Willem Nijman & indie marketing hero Kitty Calis will try to explain and demonstrate the fine, nearly useless art of making games in under 15 minutes. Embrace your restrictions, regret your decisions, and get ready to slap some new games on your portfolio! All of this is done without computers or software, using whatever physical goods are at hand: from straws to rubber bands and towels, anything can be a game!

Intended audience: Anybody interested in design and creative thinking!

Requirements: No knowledge required!

Tools participants should bring:
Nothing required, but if you'd prefer to make games a certain way, make sure to bring something - ideally not game related - for that.

Learn how to use the Arduino microcontroller to turn anything into a keyboard, build your own custom game controller, using the same techniques we use at the UK's National Videogame Arcade.

Bring an object to turn into a controller. A cardboard box, a shoe, a plastic toy? Anything with some space inside and that you can make holes in! This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. You'll learn how to make holes for buttons, solder the buttons in, and program an Arduino to make it press keyboard keys!

Note: a 15 EUR fee will be required to cover material costs – you will get to keep the controller you built at the end of the workshop.

Intended audience: Anybody

Requirements: No previous experience required.

Tools participants should bring: Laptop computer with the Arduino IDE installed (https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software) and this arduino library downloaded: http://playground.arduino.cc/Code/Bounce. Participants can share a computer.

A presentation of scientific games and a discussion moderated and lead by two representatives from GameLab of CRI-Centre de Recherche Interdisciplinaire in Paris.

Some of the ideas and topics of discussion are:

  • Where do science and games meet?
  • What are the most successful scientific games so far?
  • What makes a game truly educational in terms of science? (Science-themed vs science-based)
  • What kind of learning is best done with games vs. other media?
  • When and how should games be used in schools?
  • What makes a citizen science game work well?
  • What do non-scientists get out of participating?
  • What are the ethics around using scientific knowledge to improve retention, and do they exploit players?
  • What are the ethics around tracking players and their gameplay?
  • There seems to be a lack of interesting art styles in scientific games. Why is that?
  • Is this a symptom of a larger gap between art and science, and if so, how to bridge it?
  • Where would biology hackers see a need for a game?

Intended audience:
Scientists, Designers, Biohackers anyone interested in scientific games.

Requirements: None.

Tools participants should bring:
None.
